1. ピアノレッスンは、皆さんが思うよりもずっと「難しい」ことを学ぶ場です
1. Piano lessons are a place to learn something far more challenging than you might imagine.
よく「役者が台本を読むこと」に例えられますが、ピアノの譜読みはそれ以上に過酷です。文字を追うだけでなく、音の高さ、リズム、指の動き、そして「言葉のない表現」を同時に処理しなければなりません。役者が文字を読めなければ、本当の表現（演技）は生まれません。ピアノレッスンも全く同じです。「自力で読める」という土台がなければ、表現のスタートラインにすら立てないのです。
Music is often compared to an actor reading a script, but reading music is far more demanding. If an actor cannot read, true expression is impossible. Piano lessons are the same: without the foundation of independent reading, one cannot even reach the starting line of musical expression.

私が『ピアノ・アドベンチャー』のサイト・リーディング・ブックを重視しているのは、それが「これ以上ないほどシンプル」に設計されているからです。もし、このシンプルな曲がスムーズに弾けないのだとしたら、それは練習不足以前に「自力で読み解く回路がストップしている」という深刻なサインです。その状態で無理にレベルを上げることは、本人を苦しめるだけであり、本当の学びにはなりません。
I use the "Piano Adventures" Sightreading books as a benchmark because they are designed to be exceptionally simple. If a student struggles with these exercises, it’s a red flag that their independent reading process has stalled. Pushing forward without addressing this only leads to struggle, not learning.
3. 「マペット」を育ててはいけない（負のスパイラル）

ご家庭での練習で最も懸念すべきなのは、答えを教え込んでしまう「マペット教育」です。隣で答えを教えたり、自力で読む前に手本を見せたりすることは、子供の「自分で考える力」を遮断します。その場では弾けたように見えても、それは音楽ではなく「コピー」です。私はこれまで、この状態で崩れてしまった生徒をたくさん立て直してきました。だからこそ、レッスンにおいてもご家庭においても、見て見ぬふりはできません。
The biggest danger in home practice is "Puppet Training"—spoon-feeding the answers. Showing them how to play before they read it themselves shuts down their cognitive processing. It may look like they are playing, but it’s just a "copy," not music. Having helped many students recover from this "Negative Spiral," I cannot overlook its risks.

私は長年、全米音楽指導者協会（MTNA）に所属し、アメリカのトップ層の指導者や著名な現代作曲家たちの勉強会に数え切れないほど参加してきました。そこで彼らが口を酸っぱくして強調していたのは、**「楽譜が読めなければ、何も始まらない」**という事実です。
私が尊敬する指折りの先生方に生徒を送り届ける際も、オーディションで最も厳密に評価されるのは「正確な読譜力」でした。一方で、生徒がなかなか伸び悩んでいる教室ほど、実は「楽譜が読めていない」という共通点があります。正確な読譜力は、一生モノの上達と「脳へのベネフィット」をもたらし、将来の可能性を広げてくれる最強の武器になるのです。
During my many years with the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), I have worked with top-tier American educators and renowned contemporary composers. They all share the same stance: "If you can't read the score, you can't start anything." When I have sent students to prominent teachers for auditions, the most critical factor evaluated was always their independent literacy. Mastering the score provides lifelong progress and cognitive benefits, empowering students to explore any musical direction with true freedom.

6. 私の願いは「あなたを早く卒業させること」
6. My Goal is for You to "Graduate" from Me
私のレッスンにおけるゴールは、生徒たちが一刻も早く私を必要としなくなることです。 特に私は「導入期から上級手前まで」の指導を最も得意としており、そこで一生モノの確かな基礎を築くことに全力を注いでいます。自分の力で楽譜を読み、自分の心で解釈し、自由にピアノを奏でられる。その「一生モノの自由」を手に入れた時こそ、私の役割が終わる時です。私はその知識をすべて授け、一刻も早く私から自立してほしいという願いで教えています。
My ultimate goal is for my students to no longer need me. My expertise lies in building a rock-solid foundation from the introductory level up to the pre-advanced stage. When they can read music, interpret it with their own hearts, and play freely—that is when my job is done. I teach so that they may gain this lifelong freedom and become independent as soon as possible.

私は「自立こそが楽しみの鍵」と信じていますが、ピアノを習う目的は人それぞれです。大切なのは、先生・生徒・ご家族の三者が同じ方向を向くことです。もし「今は一曲だけを気楽に楽しみたい」というご希望があれば尊重しますが、基礎がない状態での背伸びは、楽しみが「苦行」になるリスクがあることも知っておいてください。私たちは、お子様の未来を一緒に育むチームです。
I believe independence is the key to enjoyment, but goals vary. If you wish to focus on enjoying one piece, I will honor that. However, be aware that without a foundation, music can become a "struggle" rather than a "joy." We are a team dedicated to your child's future—let's talk anytime.

追伸： 前回のブログで「ピアノを学ぶと脳（特に言語力）が発達する」というMITの研究論文を紹介しましたが、実は今回登場したカレンさんは、その生きた証拠でもあります。
彼女は当時住んでいたケンタッキー州レキシントンのボーモントエリア（公立の最難関校があることで有名です）で、なんと国語（英語）を4学年も飛び級していました！最終的には現地の学校では物足りなくなり、シンシナティの超進学校へ編入されたほどです。これにはご両親も、「カレンがここまで伸びた理由は、ピアノ以外には考えられない」と確信を持って仰っていました。
もちろん本人の努力もありますが、私たちが取り組んだのは、とにかく「簡単な曲を大量に弾く」こと。今の通常のレッスンの2〜3倍近い数のテキストをこなし、圧倒的な「読譜の土台」を作りました。その結果、短期間で難しい曲も自力でアンプまで仕上げられる、最強の譜読み力が身についたんです。

P.S. Important Note on Brain Development: In my previous post, I shared an MIT study about how learning piano boosts language skills. Karen is a living testament to this. While living in the Beaumont area of Lexington (known for its top-tier schools), she actually skipped four grade levels in her English classes! Eventually, she even transferred to a highly prestigious private school in Cincinnati to find a curriculum that could keep up with her.
Her parents were certain, telling me, "We can't think of any reason for Karen's incredible growth other than her piano studies."
Our secret was simple: we focused on playing a massive volume of easy pieces. We went through 2-3 times as many textbooks as usual to build an unshakable reading foundation.
